- MONTÉE ET DESCENTE     [31:44]

(Composition pour 16 tonalités Shepard)

Montée et Descente is an undecidable sound structure. It consists of sixteen lines of various Shepard tones, which are subconsciously interpreted by the auditory system as representing a continuous glide of tones. Montée et Descente is influenced by Penrose's idea of impossible objects and the related litograph by Dutch artist Maurits Escher.

Lionel Penrose first published his concept of the impossible stairways in 1958 and M.C. Escher developed his masterpiece Ascending and Descendingbased on Penrose's work in 1960. A "Shepard tone" is a similar acoustical illusion, named after Roger Newland Shepard, that can be constructed by creating a series of overlapping ascending or descending scales, which Jean-Claude Risset further developed to create the continuous Shepard-Risset Glissando

In Montée et Descente, different Shepard tones are superimposed and because some of them are an augmented fourth apart, the Tritone paradox also happens in specific layers of the composition. The whole architecture can be viewed as an impossible object, a sort of audio Necker cube, and different listeners may perceive some layers as being either ascending or descending. A view of deep space, the piece may simulate some kind of topographical disorientation experience, as the listener is unable to accurately reach for musical events or state the beginning or end of the composition.
